A sizeable number of families I work with live in Minnesota, but relatively few consider the University of Iowa and Iowa State. I think that is a mistake for students who are looking for a great regional state school with good academics and a reasonable price tag.
Both schools are in college-town communities, which should make parents happy. They thankfully have not allowed their sports programs to dominate their academic reputation (unlike other schools, like Ohio State and Penn State). Iowa, as a state, has a stellar academic tradition from K-12, and Iowans are just some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
The Univ. of Iowa and Iowa State will never be UC Berkeley, the University of Michigan, or the University of Virginia. But who cares? They are both outstanding state schools with great price tags, amazing faculty, and an international alumni. What is there to hate? Check them out!
