Think Extension Programs
Some of the nation's top colleges also have extension programs, which were originally conceived as a way for working adults and members of the community to take open enrollment courses to develop skills or simply to further their education.
Things are different today, and that is a good thing.
Platinum-caliber schools such as UCLA and UC Berkeley have thriving extension programs that lead to wonderful certificates. I obtained one myself from UCLA, and it was a terrific experience. Harvard, one of my alma maters, has a very well-regarded extension program that is even recognized with its own seal by the Regents of Harvard University.
I firmly believe that learning is lifelong, and that students in a "gap year" or working adults seeking to keep at the top of their game, and even seniors seeking to stay active intellectually can all benefit from these programs. I wouldn't recommend them if I had not gone through the experience myself, and I think they are well worth exploring.
